this is our 40th anniversary of having a national park in san francisco. so, those strikev lands at the golden gate hills right behind that helicopter there are now part of the golden gate national parks. and that happened 40 years ago when the army decided that those lands were no longer necessary for national defense. so, that strategic entrance to this harbor was the last land that our troops and sailors and marines and soldiers would see if they departed for the pacific theater in world war ii and korea and vietnam, and also the first thing they would see upon returning back to the bay area. so, between the presidio and the head lands, we now have wonderful park lands that have been converted. we call it converting from post to park. repurposing those lands from national defense to environmental defense. and i believe it is probably the most accessful base conversion in the united states. if you haven't been to the presidio, i think you should try and make that. if you're from out of town, it's a spectacular transition there. so, these golden gate nati

i graduated from san francisco state and it was creative writing within the english department. i was taking a class much like this. writers on writing and a writer came to speak to a group of young writers the first writer who came was a poet. and i was i fell madly in love with language. i think that's why i'm probably conscious with the writing process because i began with the foundation of language, which is poetry for me. it made me aware of how to use language. not to over use language. you know things like that that aspects of it. i talk a lot about the writing process for a lot of reasons because i think that if you tell what it really means to be a writer people will think oh , it's not -- i think to a large extent you all think we run with the bulls. you know and you think we are sitting in cafes and i can never write in a cafe because i would watch people too much. how can you sit in a cafe and write a novel? we all have our process. i think the interesting things to talk about is the process how you do it because we all do it differently. i don't run with the bulls o

we all know how rental housing works and represent control works in san francisco. rent control is vacancy dee controlled. once the unit is vacant the landlord can move to market rate. so, i completely agree many of the city's policies with respect to planning code 317 and the retention of affordable housing centers around the retention of the city's existing and somewhat dwindling stock of rent control housing. that is an important goal. we are eliminating rent control housing. in this case that's what we're asking to you do. what we're going to replace it with is what we think is better. we are going to replace this with not rent control housing where rents can go up and down depending on vacancies, we'll replace it with two below market rate units. the process in the code has gotten extremely complex with respect to dwelling unit mergers and demolitions. 317 is very comprehensive. there are supposed to be -- there are 16 factors here before you. i don't have time to go through all 16 factors. what i do want to focus on are the factors that i believe are the big i

only 58 degrees in concord. 60 in oakland. 59 san francisco and san jose. toward the afternoon, going to try to bring some slow clearing to the bay area. the temperatures are going to be cool. and tonight, plenty of clouds, maybe a little drizzle out toward the immediate coastline but a gradual warming trend this weekend. i think that's going to set the stage for next week which looks fantastic. this low is finally moving out. it looks like dry days ahead now for the foreseeable future as high pressure is going to be taking over. so with that in mine, plan on some great weather coming our way as we head throughout the weekend a lot nicer over the next few days. still clouds will slowly clear out toward the afternoon. then tonight, likely beginning to surge back onshore. so not going to be cloud-free over the weekend. we'll have to deal with patchy fog and low clouds. otherwise the temperatures are going to stay cool today. plan only 60s around the bay area and well below average. next couple of days we'll heat up 70s in the warmest spots by saturday, maybe

what a morning for san francisco police officers. i spoke briefly with the officer who said she was shot at. this started with a basic traffic stop on a car. that car is down the street. and the initial stop was actually just because a license plate light was out but look at that car now. the cadillac in the middle of the street. it ran the intersection and was nailed by a taxi. this is at franklin and eddy streets. eddy is blocked with the car parked and glass in the street as investigators work and look for one suspect who got away. this started around 2:00 this morning. officers tried to stop the car. the car pulls over. they believe someone inside fired at least one shot at officers. those officers are okay. they tell me then the car took off, ran a light and then got hit by a cab as it was in the intersection, but then kept going about half a block. two people inside that car jumped out and officers had to chase them on foot. >> it's a lot. it's a lot to go through. i'm still digesting it. it takes a while to have it process thr
